Flat Rock Archives director, Johnny Waits has been busy hosting tours through the Airbnb website titled ‘Walk through African American History.’
The tour begins at the historic Lyons house, which is one of the oldest standing structures in DeKalb county. The Lyons house is a historic farm house and is a great representation of how residents of the area lived before the Civil War. The house has a basement that slaves lived in before the Civil War. The house is currently under renovation and when finished will allow tour goers a more intimate experience of the historic house.
After visiting the house, the tour continues in the Flat Rock Historic Cemetery where it is possible to learn about those buried in the cemetery and the unique layout of the historic African American cemetery.
Many of our Airbnb participants continue the tour and visit the Flat Rock Archives. The tours have brought locals as well as people from all over the world. The tours have provided the archives the opportunity to share our history and stories with people that might have otherwise never crossed paths with the archives. We are having so much fun with all of our new friends!
